Ruby, "There's No Place Like Home"

Update March 14, 2014 - RUBY HAS A NEW HOME! Thank you to everyone and Genie at The Gulfport Gabber for helping us get the word out and finding a forever home for "Ruby."  She has been at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital since December 9 when caring Lakewood residents found her injured and brought her to us. We will miss seeing her every day but we're glad her new home and loving family is still very close by. See you soon, Ruby!

            "Cane Corso Mastiff"

Black brindle Female approx. 4 years old, 90 lbs., vaccs/spayed

On December 9, 2013 at the end of our work day at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital, Good Samaritans from Lakewood Estates pulled into our hospital with a very frightened and badly injured female Cane Corso Mastiff that was found on the Lakewood golf course. “Ruby” as we later named her, had numerous infected bite wounds around her neck and torso, two gaping wounds on her side and elbow, a severe ear infection, she was full of internal parasites and infested with fleas.  We believe Ruby was dumped there after being illegally used as a “bait” dog to train fight dogs.

Dr. Trefz and his team at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital, Robin, Melissa, Desi, Brenda and Nick, immediately got this poor girl into the treatment center to tend to the severe, gaping wounds. The team stayed with her into the night. She was thoroughly bathed, medicated and placed in our critical care ward where she received fluids, food, oxygen, warmth, comfy blankets…and most of all, a place where she felt protected and safe while getting a whole lot of love and attention from “Dr. Scot” and the staff. Ruby was able to sleep peacefully over the next several days as she healed.  She started feeling great fast!  She’s an incredibly sweet girl and let us know right away how much she appreciated us and felt safe with us!

Three months has past and now Ruby is healthy and happy! She has learned to trust and is playful and loves her time outside in our yard - and loves her toys and peanut butter bones and chicken chews that we keep in stock especially for her!  It’s fitting now how Desiree came up with the name “Ruby” as our 3 month journey with her now tells us that Ruby is ready to find a forever home of her very own that she deserves.  We are asking our clients, neighbors and community to please "work your magic" and help us find a home for Ruby.

This article will be also appear on our Facebook page – please look for it and "share" and "like" and maybe make a phone call or two to anyone you think might be looking for a “Ruby”.  After all she’s been through, we recommend that Ruby be your only furry child. Any interested parties can call for Karen or Nick at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital at 727-867-0118.  We will accommodate your schedule to come visit Ruby anytime.

About the Cane Corso Breed:

Per the AKC, the Cane Corso as a protector of his property and owners is unequaled. Intelligent, he is easily trained. Noble, majestic and powerful, his presence is impressive. He is docile and affectionate to his owner, loving with children and family. His direct ancestor is the "Canis Pugnax" (the old Roman Molossian) of which he is the light version employed in the hunting of large wild animals and also as an "auxiliary warrior" in battles. For years he has been a precious companion of the Italic populations. Employed as property, cattle and personal guard besides being used for hunting purposes too.  His name derives from the Latin "Cohors" which means "Guardian", "Protector."

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "We've followed Dr.Trefz from his former hospital in Clearwater because we were unable to find a vet that could live up to the high standards Dr.Trefz and his staff provided to our 4-legged family members. The compassion and love shown to us when we lost our best friends to their Heavenly home was such a blessing. Dr. Trefz and his staff are exceptional professionals, friends and great human beings. The 30 minute drive from Clearwater is well worth it for the wonderful care our sweet boy Hunter receives. Love Dr. Trefz and staff!"
    Diana B. - Clearwater, FL
  • "Dr. Trefz is the best Vet Doc we have ever had for our dear Katie. He is so caring and really takes an interest in you and your "baby." Dr. Trefz will actually call to check-up on your animal. The entire staff is truly amazing."
    Sandy G.
  • "We drive over an hour one way to bring our 11 year old Bengal, Sumo, to Dr Trevz. He was Sumos original vet, but when he left the Clearwater practice we "lost him" for a bit. We took a very sick Sumo to Dr Trevz& his staff. We were ready to be told to put him down. But one by one, Dr T tackles his infections and issues...and we almost have him back to perfect health' we are grateful beyond words for the caring and expertise of Dr T & his staff!"
