Meet Dr. Trefz & Staff

Dr. Scot Trefz
Owner/Medical Director

Hi, I’m Dr. Scot Trefz.  I am the Veterinarian/Medical Director and sole owner of Bay Moorings Animal Hospital that I purchased on May 6, 2013.  I look forward to meeting you and your furry children very soon!  I am committed to providing the very best veterinary care at affordable prices for your four legged family members in a compassionate, warm and family oriented environment while exceeding clients’ expectations of customer service; just as I and my team have done in Northern Pinellas for over 24 years at Gulf Bay Animal Hospital in Clearwater, a practice I recently sold to return to St. Pete.

I was born in Lakeland and my family moved to St. Petersburg where I grew up.  I graduated from Canterbury High School where my name is proudly the first to be adorned on Canterbury’s gymnasium wall recognizing past top scholar athletes.  I then went directly to UF for my undergraduate study where I was accepted early into UF’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In recognition ranking in the top 5% of my veterinary class, I was admitted as a junior into the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Honor Society, Phi Zeta, in 1984.  I was bestowed the surgical excellence award for my senior veterinary class and graduated with honors on June 1, 1985.

I had the privilege and honor to have had the late Dr. Bill Goldston as a mentor.  Dr. Goldston hired me as a teenager to assist at his veterinary clinic.  He is the reason I am a veterinarian today.  I owe quite a lot to Bill.

I relocated to Tierra Verde in 2014 with my fiancée’, Karen who helps on the admin and marketing side of our clinic, and our 2 cats, Chappy and Munchkin.  Over the last few years, we lost our 3 canine sons, an American Bull, a Doberman and a Lab, all to old age. A puppy may be in our near future!

Dr. Jennifer DeStefano
Associate Veterinarian

Hi, I'm Dr. Jennifer DeStefano and I graduated from the University of Florida in 1998. Since that time I have worked in Pinellas County and have immensely enjoyed taking care of many family pets from puppy/kittenhood until their older days.

I enjoy bonding with my clients and patients, and I am very excited to be with the team here at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital! I enjoy wellness care and preventative medicine and am dedicated to helping my clients do all they can to prevent problems and keep their furry family members as healthy as possible.

On a personal front, I am the proud mother of a 16 year old boy-girl twins and a 9 year old daughter. My 3 kiddos keep me so busy that currently we do not have a pet, but we are in the process of looking for a special dog to adopt - and my kids are very excited!

I also love finding new fun places to eat out and live here in St. Pete - I think it's a great little city! My kids and I also love going to the beach and shopping (well, the girls do!). They also enjoy spending time with my folks, their grandparents who live on Tierra Verde! I look forward to meeting all of you and am thrilled to be a part of Dr. Trefz's team!

Dr. Melissa Feldman

Associate Veterinarian

Hi, I am Dr. Melissa Feldman; I am a proud Florida native - having grown up in Miami, Florida before graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's in Animal Biology, a Master's in Public Health and Epidemiology and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. I have always had an insatiable interest in all things animal related, but it was through my public health training that I realized the importance of the human-animal bond and the vital role a veterinarian holds, acting as the mediator between humans, animals and the environment. As a general practitioner, I believe it is important to apply this fact every day by thoroughly explaining my patients' case with their owners. My goal is for you to not only understand 'the what' but more importantly 'the why.' As a result of this fervent belief, I have developed a keen interest in internal medicine but also have an advancing interest in soft tissue surgery. I could not be more excited to be joining the excellent team at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital; where we provide exceptional care for your furry family members and also teach you the tools necessary to keep them healthy and happy.

My husband Tim and I have multiple furry family members of our own. We have a 15 year old Himalayan cat named Superman who is a cancer survivor. We have a 7 year old Great Dane named Xaria I rescued while in veterinary school, and most recently we have acquired a 16-week old Labrador Retriever puppy named Donovan! In my spare time, I most enjoy being on the water - my husband and I can regularly be found paddle boarding and kayaking all over Tampa Bay. On occasion I will even tie up the longboard and head to the East Coast for some surfing! Tim and I have fallen in love with the city of St. Pete; we are eager to set some roots here and I could not be happier to call Bay Moorings Animal Hospital home!

Certified Veterinary Technician

Hi, I'm Ashley and I am a Certified Vet Tech here at Bay Moorings Animal hospital. I am a native of Rotterdam, New York and completed my Veterinary Technician studies at at State University of New York at Delhi before relocating to St. Petersburg with my husband several years ago to enjoy a tropical climate.

We share our home with our furry children Oliver, a domestic short haired kitty cat and Henry, a Plotthound mix. What I love most about being a Vet Tech is seeing a sick or injured pet return to good health again and educating clients on providing the very best care so their pets can maximize their life span and live the longest, healthiest lives possible!

In my spare time I enjoy watching movies, reading and catching up on my rest!

Veterinary Technician

Hello! My name is Jessica, and I am one of the technicians here at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital. I was born in Paducah, Kentucky, but as a military brat, I really grew up all over the country! I joined the Army myself at the young age of 17 and served in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011. I’ve always wanted to work with animals. In fact, on my kindergarten interview, I answered "Veterinarian" when they asked what I wanted to be when I grew up!

I moved to St. Petersburg when my service with the Army ended in 2012. I bought a house in 2016 for my zoo, which includes my two dogs (Kira the Husky and Molly the pit/lab), my parrot (Pepe), my cockatiel (Birdie) my ball python (Draco), and my Star Wars themed fish tank! When I'm not at work, you can find me playing video games, relaxing at the beach, reading, or making something artsy.

I can't wait to meet you and your pets and sincerely look forward to bringing exceptional customer service to the BMAH clients and getting to know your 4-legged fur babies better!

In 2009 I shifted my career to work in the veterinary field and began working at a veterinary hospital in Manatee County.  I truly enjoy working at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital as a veterinary and surgery technician.

I am a native Ohioan but moved to St. Pete in 2018, with my fiance, Terry, and our three-legged cat, Erin. After vacationing here for several years, we decided to make the move to the Sunshine State!

Veterinary  & Surgical Technician

Lucas attended the Veterinary Technology program in Virginia and has been a veterinary technician since 2005. Prior to choosing a career in the veterinary medical field, Lucas served in the United States Marine Corps from 1998 to 2003.

We have left Lucas' bio on our website in his memory. For those of you who got to know and love him for his extraordinary 16 years of veterinary technician skills, Lucas suffered a massive stroke and left this world in September 2020. His parents requested this photo of him hard at work at Bay Moorings as his Memorial Photo. RIP Lucas, you are sorely missed.

Certified Veterinary Technician

Hello! My name is Bryana.

My 2 greatest loves: my 2- legged daughter and all the animals of the world!

As a young girl, I knew I wanted to work with animals because, “if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life!”  Since I started my career in veterinary medicine 15 years ago, every day has been full of passion!

I graduated the SPC Veterinary Technology program & achieved my certification in 2016!  What an accomplishment!!!

What makes me excited to come to work every day is developing relationships with you (the owners) and your pets (our patients). It fills my heart to help you care for your pet any way necessary!

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” –Anatole France

Hospital Manager

Hi, my name is Karen and I handle the Administrative, Finance, Marketing, and PR/Community communication functions for Dr. Trefz and the team at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital.  When not at the front desk or in my accounting office, you’re most likely to find me in the kennel or sick ward brushing and playing with our visiting patients and boarders while they are away from their families and homes.

I held controller positions in the construction and manufacturing industries and spent the last 17 years in the software technology field prior to joining Bay Moorings upon Dr. Trefz’s purchase of the clinic.

I reside in Tierra Verde with Dr. Trefz who is also my fiancee’, and our 2 cats Chappy, a medium hair Orange boy and Munchkin, a beautiful male Ragdoll.  I relocated to Clearwater, Florida in 1977 from my hometown of Dayton, Ohio.  I believe that makes me a semi-native!

Hi, I'm Carol, and I work part time at the front desk at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital, but I am not new to being on Dr.Trefz's veterinary team.  Actually, I guess I could say I'm an original since I have worked with him since he graduated from vet school.  I was working at a veterinary clinic in Largo when he came to work there as a new and very enthusiastic young veterinarian.  After he purchased Gulf Bay Animal Hospital in Clearwater, I did relief work for his new clinic and in 1998, I filled in for a technician who was going on maternity leave for 2 months. Those 2 months turned into over 20 years working full time for him until I retired in 2008. After a few years, I discovered that retirement was not all it was cracked up to be! As Bay Moorings Animal Hospital has grown over the years, I am thrilled to be back with Dr.Trefz part time. I often refer to him as my "little brother" since I have known him for so long!

I have a degree in education and taught kindergarten in my younger days. Over the course of many years, I have raised 4 children and a multitude of cats!  Every stray cat that entered my world at Dr. Trefz's previous clinic, well, I always made room for them at my home. I'm now down to two senior cats, Baby, 14 and Sienna, 17.  I also enjoy 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren! In my spare time, you will find me at the gym, on a golf course or home reading or working on a variety of puzzles, from crossword to jigsaw!  Sometimes, my son Fred flies into town and I spend the day with him!

Josefina "JoJo" - Receptionist

Hi, my name is Josefina and I am a front desk receptionist at Bay Moorings.

Growing up, animals have always been an interest of mine. I remember as a kid bringing home strays and attempting to claim them as my own. It wasn’t until I was 18 years old when I first got my pet, Cocoa, a mini Australian Shepherd. A couple of years later my, fur-family has increased to second dog, Marco, a Tuxedo cat, Shadow, and lastly my special boy Chee Chee who is a sugar glider.

My passion grows further than our beloved pets but their owners who show a great deal of interest and compassion towards their well being. I will always strive my best for every being that walks through our door to feel comfortable, so they know their pet is in good hands and secure to ask any questions for we are here for you both!

Receptionist/Front Desk Manager

Hi, my name is Melissa and I am the front desk manager and a technician assistant furthering my training in the veterinary field.  After a 16 year career with Publix, I followed my heart and pursued a career in the veterinary field and joined Dr. Trefz’s former practice in 2007.  My furry family includes Chloe, a Chihuahua, and two cats named Storm and PeeWee.  I was born with a love for animals that brought me into this profession to begin with and keeps me always anxious to get to work to see what the new day brings!

On my days off, I’m usually curled up reading a novel, working in my garden or relaxing at the beach with my husband, Dave.

I have 3 human teen age children, Alison, Jeremy and Matthew.  I moved to Florida from my hometown of Bridgeport, Connecticut when I was 8 years old and reside in Largo.

Kennel Manager & Vet Tech Assistant

My name is Mark and I work full-time for Bay Moorings Animal Hospital as their Kennel Manager and a Vet Technician assistant. For the last several years, I have been working hands on with all kinds of animals as part of my duties to manage and oversee all aspects of kennel operations and boarding facilities.

I am originally from Syracuse, New York and relocated to the St. Petersburg area several years ago to escape the blistering winters for our tropical climate. I am an avid New York Giants fan and in my spare time you'll usually find me enjoying my work outs at the gym, playing darts and otherwise enjoying anything the Florida outdoors has to offer.

I am delighted to be part of the incredible team here at Bay Moorings Animal Hospital and look forward to meeting all of you and your furry children.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "We've followed Dr.Trefz from his former hospital in Clearwater because we were unable to find a vet that could live up to the high standards Dr.Trefz and his staff provided to our 4-legged family members. The compassion and love shown to us when we lost our best friends to their Heavenly home was such a blessing. Dr. Trefz and his staff are exceptional professionals, friends and great human beings. The 30 minute drive from Clearwater is well worth it for the wonderful care our sweet boy Hunter receives. Love Dr. Trefz and staff!"
    Diana B. - Clearwater, FL
  • "Dr. Trefz is the best Vet Doc we have ever had for our dear Katie. He is so caring and really takes an interest in you and your "baby." Dr. Trefz will actually call to check-up on your animal. The entire staff is truly amazing."
    Sandy G.
  • "We drive over an hour one way to bring our 11 year old Bengal, Sumo, to Dr Trevz. He was Sumos original vet, but when he left the Clearwater practice we "lost him" for a bit. We took a very sick Sumo to Dr Trevz& his staff. We were ready to be told to put him down. But one by one, Dr T tackles his infections and issues...and we almost have him back to perfect health' we are grateful beyond words for the caring and expertise of Dr T & his staff!"
